Surrounded by tropical forest trees and gardens, the accommodations are in comfortable suites or two-bedroom fully furnished houses with facilities such as air, Wi-Fi, cable, hot water, and access to a splash pool. Larger accommodations can be arranged upon request.

Program

Day 1: Arrival - ranch orientation - riding to Portegolpe

You will be transferred from Liberia's Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) or TTamarindo Airport (TNO) to your comfortable accommodations at the Painted Pony Guest Ranch, located just minutes from the beautiful Pacific beaches of Guanacaste.

If you arrive by the late afternoon, you will have a ranch orientation; a Criollo horse demonstration and then, ride to the town of Portegolpe. You will stop for a cold drink at a family Cantina in the village and then ride back to the ranch by sunset. Dinner will be served either at the ranch or a local restaurant.

Day 2: Riding along the old Spanish trail

After a hearty ranch breakfast, you will ride along an old Spanish trail that traverses through large haciendas and backcountry trails. Along the way, you can look for monkeys, tropical birds, and dry tropical vegetation. Stop in the cattle town of Tempate for lunch and cold drinks then ride the old Spanish trail back to the ranch.

Take a dip in the pool and relax before dinner at the ranch. Afternoon option: you can watch the head trainer work with young horses using Natural Horsemanship techniques.

Day 3: Monkey Park and Rescue Center visit and riding to Lorena

After breakfast, begin the day with a non-riding visit to Monkey Park and Rescue Center to see the native wildlife and birds found in Guanacaste or a lesson. After lunch, you will ride your horse through the beautiful ranch country and over the coastal hills to the small village of Lorena for a stop at one of the most popular cantina stops, Chilito’s – La Cima to sample their famous fried chicken and chips – a real “Taste of Guanacaste”. You will then ride back to the ranch at sunset.

Day 4: Cattle drive experience

Enjoy breakfast, then mount your horses riding through oxcart trails and large working cattle ranches. Follow the trails of the conquistadors to Cartagena where you will have lunch at a typical cowboy cantina. Spend the late afternoon at one of the pristine beaches for sunset, or at the ranch working with the horses. Meals at the ranch.

Day 5: Tico Trails tour

After a delicious cup of Costa Rican coffee and home-made goodies, you will take an early morning Tico Trails tour, passing along rivers, through impressive wooded countryside, ranches, and picturesque villages. Along the way, you may see Howler monkeys, and colorful tropical birds as well as getting a glimpse of the traditional Sabanero cowboy culture. When you arrive back at the ranch, a traditional Tico breakfast cooked over firewood will be served. A special afternoon to be arranged or visit to a local fiesta when available.

Day 6: Non-riding day

This a non-riding day to enjoy the Tamarindo Beach with shopping, swimming, surfing or you can opt for a river tour of the Palo Verde National Park, Flamingo Beach, or all-day tours to Arenal Volcano or Granada Nicaragua. Morning Natural Horsemanship or Centered Riding instruction or lessons by arrangement.

Day 7: Riding along while Pacific beach of Puerto Viejo

After breakfast, you will meet your horses in the small village of La Garita to ride along hidden back roads canopied by giant tropical forest trees. Overhead, you may hear the conversations of Howler monkeys. When you reach the beach, your ride will stop in Puerto Viejo for a cold drink.

You will ride along the pristine white Pacific beach of Puerto Viejo, Conchal, and Brasilito. There, you will take time to play in the water and photos. You can then either swim or walk on the beach before lunch or dinner at a beachfront restaurant. Times depend on the low tide.

Day 8: Departure day

You will be transferred back to the airport. Horse activity depending on transfer times.

Please book your flight to arrive at Liberia's Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR). Transfer from and to this airport is available at an additional charge of 60 USD. You can also fly to Tamarindo Airport (TNO). Bus, tourist bus, or private driver is by arrangement.

If you fly to Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), transfer to the ranch can be arranged at 220 USD.
