Salt Creek Ranch is pleased to offer to ride instruction by Carol Retzer, Osage County’s first certified level I centered riding instructor. Centered riding is used successfully by riders and instructors of all ages, interests, and levels, from pleasure riders to international competitors, and in therapeutic riding. It can be applied to any type of horse or horsemanship. Most of all, it makes riding more enjoyable for horses and riders. Centered riding techniques help promote suppleness, stability, and clearer aids, making riding more comfortable for both horse and rider.

These techniques can increase confidence and enjoyment and release tension in horses and riders, making training easier. They also help people cope with old injuries or chronic conditions that cause pain during or after riding. Centering and grounding techniques from the oriental martial arts are used along with body awareness, mental imagery, and sports psychology. Through increasing body awareness, inhibiting old patterns, and replacing them with a more balanced, free, and coordinated use of self, both horse and rider can move more freely and comfortably, and develop their best performance.

If you’re new to centered riding, it is recommended for you to ride a fairly well-trained horse during the clinic, that will allow you to work on yourself, as you learn centered riding skills.

Riding sessions will be one hour in length, with two to three riders per lesson. Lessons are tailored to student’s needs and interests. For riders new to centered riding, Intro to centered riding is offered. For qualified riders with previous centered riding experience from centered riding Lessons and / or CR Clinics, Salt Creek Ranch offers continuing centered riding sessions.

Horse must be able to work safely in a group, must be able to at least walk and trot safely in a group, and must not be disruptive or a danger to others in the class. If you’re new to centered riding, Salt Creek Ranch recommends that you ride a fairly well-trained horse during the clinic, that will allow you to work on yourself, as you learn centered riding skills. Stallions are not permitted. Horses should be current on all vaccinations and worming; current proof of negative Coggins and health certificate are required for all clinic horses. A few school horses are available for use in the clinic for a charge of 25 USD per day.

Some stabling is available on site. Stall bedding is available for purchase; please clean your own stall. Horses hauling in and out each day should be tied to the trailer in parking areas (or in the trailer). Overnight camping for riders is an option, but please reserve a pen or stall for your horse’s overnight stay.
