You will spend eight days following the spine of the Continental Divide through the Weminuche Wilderness of the San Juan Mountains which have the highest average elevation in the United States. The Continental Divide Trail is the newest trans-continental trail from Canada to Mexico. You travel from Silverton to Wolf Creek Pass, arguably the most beautiful section of the entire trail. The terrain ranges from volcanic domes to jagged granitic peaks with alpine lakes lurking between. This is a true adventure where the weather and the terrain interplay, only letting you pass when the conditions are just right. The horses are the best mountain horses anywhere and will transport you safely on this 85-mile traveling camp expedition. This is a trip for experienced horseback riders looking for the ultimate in scenery and adventure.
You will be setting up / taking down your tent daily. Over the Hill Outfitters will gladly provide one, but if you have your own favorite, feel free to bring it.
The other aspect of the business on the Palmer Quarter Horse Ranch is to breed, raise and sell Quarter Horses that are ideally suited to the endeavors that are important to working and living in the mountains. The bloodlines are true foundation bred performance horses such as Two Eyed Jack and Gay Bar King. Because Over the Hill Outfilters uses these horses in their operations, they pay special attention to disposition in addition to great confirmation in the breeding program
All of the adventures take place between 7,000-14,000 feet. Over the Hill Outfitters advises arriving in Durango two or three days ahead of your departure date so that you can acclimate gradually. Drink lots of fluids as hydration is one of the best defenses to altitude sickness. Stay away from alcohol and caffeine to minimize dehydration.
To protect the horses, there is a weight limit on the Continental Divide Ride of 190 pounds if height is less than 6′ or 210 pounds if height is over 6′.
You travel from Silverton to Wolf Creek Pass, the most beautiful section of the entire trail. It's located in Colorado, USA.
All meals are prepared, cooked and served by fantastic chefs and cooks. Breakfast, lunch, appetizers, dinner, and dessert are included. Meals are primarily hearty western cuisine with sparing no expense to include steak and potatoes, fresh vegetables and fruits, hamburgers and chicken, homemade cobblers and pies. Breakfasts may consist of sausage and egg breakfast burritos, pancakes and bacon, French toast or even crepes! Meals are prepared over open fires and in dutch ovens, the grill, ovens, and stovetops packed into camp via horseback. Special dietary needs may be met if communicated in advance. Beverages included are water, Gatorade, sodas, coffee, juice, milk, tea, and hot cocoa.
Over the Hill Outfitters does not provide alcohol on any of the trips. They will pack in a beverage of your choice (within reason). Since the effects of alcohol are multiplied at altitude, please use common sense. Under no circumstances will anyone be allowed to ride a horse under the influence of alcohol.
