You will be accommodated in one of the 28 historic cabins At Flying U Ranch. You will stay in your own private log cabin equipped with a wood-burning stove, electricity, and covered porch. Cabins range in size to accommodate from two to seven people and feature hand-crafted wood furniture. There is also a central bathhouse with modern showers and a 15-person sauna for weary riders to relax in at the end of a long day on the trails. Dogs are welcome at the ranch but are the responsibility of their owners. For those looking for a more pampered experience, Flying U Ranch also offers two large executive homes that feature indoor plumbing and four-piece bathrooms.

Flying U Ranch has approximately 100 horses for you to get to know. Guests are assigned a horse and tack suited to their riding ability. You will explore trails, meandering through meadows, forests, and groves of aspen. All new riders will receive an orientation to Western riding and aspecific herd. Once you have matched your abilities with the perfect mount, you’re free to explore the untamed wild expanse that is British Columbia’s Cariboo.

Unaccompanied riding is a very liberating experience and one that is unique to the Flying U Ranch. Many guests have their first horseback experience here. A background with horses isn't required and the horse assigned will be chosen to meet the appropriate needs of the rider. Flying U Ranch has certified instructors onsite, who are happy to give lessons to those riders wanting a more technical introduction.

A day at the ranch

Upon arrival, each guest is assigned their own cabin. This is a highlight of the ranch experience - the guests stay in the original log cabins that were built 100 years ago. Please take a few moments to breathe in the unique cabin experience, complete with woodburning stoves, hand-hewn log furniture, covered sitting porches with rocking chairs, and a view of the most beautiful lake in central British Columbia.

After the guest checks in and gets settled, it is time to meet the horse wrangler and get introduced to the horses. Until 2017, Flying U Ranch has 100 horses and four experienced horse wranglers. Each guest is assigned a horse according to his or her ability, and that horse will be the guest's mount for the duration of the stay. Guests are given a trail map and are free to ride on their own or with other guests on thousands of acres. Riders may saddle up between 09:00 to 16:00 each day, except on Sunday when riding begins at 10:00. You can order a packed lunch or come in for lunch, served from 12:00 to 13:00.

After the day's ride, guests have a number of activities to choose from. There are swimming and canoeing on Green Lake, or enjoy a game of badminton, horseshoes, or Flying U Ranch's own unique game of "attack croquet." Or you can choose to head up to the health spa for a game of pool or a hot tub. Flying U Ranch will also be providing water skiing lessons, which are popular with the teenagers. There is a mini-golf course in the back forty, or you can take a walk down to the pond and go for a leisurely row in one of the wooden rowboats.

Mealtime at the lodge/dining room is announced with the clanging of the bell, following a tradition that goes back 100 years. Family and friends eat together ranch-style on benches with long tables. Breakfast is served promptly at 08:00 (09:00 on Sundays), lunch is at noon and dinner at 18:00. Complimentary coffee and tea are available in the kitchen throughout the day. There are a weekly outdoor lunch and dinner barbecue.

The Flying U has an authentic western saloon separate from the main lodge. The Longhorn Saloon is open from 14:00 to 18:00 daily for happy hour and again after dinner. Cocktails are served to the sounds of the circa 1880 Nickelodeon. Beer, wine, cider, and coolers can also be purchased in the dining room. Between meals, you can order finger food at the pub or the hungry kids can come to the kitchen anytime for a sandwich.

There is a horsedrawn hayride every Thursday and Sunday starting at 19:00 at the front of the lodge. Entertainment is topped off with an old western whoop-de-doo most Wednesday and Saturday nights. Square dances are held on Wednesdays throughout July and August, starting at 20:00. At the general store, open from 08:00 to 18:00, you can buy soft drinks and candy bars, snack food, horse treats, gifts, and souvenirs. At check out, guests are always reminded to confirm their dates for the following year in order to ensure cabin and date availability.
