When most people think of Oregon mountains, they think of Mount Hood and the other high Cascade volcanos on the western end of the state, but the Rockies also cross Oregon in the northeastern corner where, combined with the Snake River, they form the deepest gorge in the United States and one of the largest mountain wilderness areas.

Accommodation

You will stay in either dome tents or wall tents, usually with cots. Cornucopia Lodge do not provide pads or sleeping bags. You should provide sleeping bags.

Please note that for international travelers that are unable to provide sleeping bags, Cornucopia Lodge do have a limited available for rent. Should you choose to bring a sleeping pad, it must fit in the duffel bag that Cornucopia Lodge provides. All of your personal items, clothing, gear, etc. must fit in that bag.

Program

Day 1

Arrive at pack station at 8 a.m. Gear is loaded on mules, guests are assigned mounts and given riding Demo. Trip leaves approximately 10 a.m. for the ride to camp, depending on which direction the loop is going, is from 7-12 miles to camp.

Arrive in camp, enjoy dinner, evening campfire (when permitted). You may choose to hike about the area at your leisure.

Day 2

Pack up gear, ride to second camp location (one camp location is a high-alpine lake, and the other is at a lower elevation on a wilderness river). Arrive in camp, enjoy dinner, evening campfire (when permitted). You may choose to hike about the area at their leisure.

Day 3

Pack up and complete loop arriving back at Cornucopia Pack Station mid-afternoon.

Location

This horse riding holiday will take place in Oregon, USA. While the area has much more to enjoy than is listed here, following are the highlights. But, be sure to also make time for Brownlee Reservoir, the quaint towns of Halfway, Richland and Oxbow as well as the local museum where you'll find loads of local and mining history and artifacts. Additionally, Baker City is just a short hour (and beautiful drive) away where you can enjoy more museums, the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, and many other amenities.

Food

Cornucopia Lodge provide breakfast. Dinner and lunch meals are optional, as is the beer, wine, and soda that Cornucopia Lodge have for sale. Cornucopia Lodge are happy to accommodate dietary needs with advance notice.

Things to do (optional)

In addition to the horseback ride, you may choose to take a hike, explore the adjacent ghost town, or travel to one of the nearby towns and areas to more fully explore Oregon Trail history, gold mining history, the well-known Hells Canyon Reservoir, and many more activities. Cornucopia Lodge also have mountain bikes for your use while you are here.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Driving directions from Baker City

  • Take the OR-86 E exit, EXIT 302, toward Richland / Hells Canyon and follow OR-86 / Highway 86 for approximately 51 miles
  • Turn left onto Highway 12 Spur into Halfway OR (12 Spur becomes S Main St.)
  • Continue through Halfway. S Main St becomes Cornucopia Hwy
  • Pavement ends after 6 miles and road Y’s.
  • Stay left, then follow unpaved portion for 5 miles
  • You’ll see the sign for Cornucopia Lodge, turn right
  • Cornucopia Lodge is approximately ¼ mile past sign

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 50% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid on arrival.
