On day one, the Big Creek Lodge team will match you to your horse. No matter if beginner or skilled rider, they have the right horse for you! The morning is spent on a short orientation, to make sure you understand each other and are ready to hit the trails together. That afternoon you head out on a shorter trail ride, solidifying your relationship with your new four-legged friend, and getting used to the Western style of riding if this is new to you.

Day two onwards you hit the trails, showcasing the amazing scenery of the area. You can expect anything from creek crossings, forestry trails, beautiful lakes, open meadows, and incredible views. The terrain can be pretty rough, but very varied, and the guides have a penchant for explorations so be ready to experience something new, the trails can accommodate the relaxing pace for the less experienced beginner or add some fun challenges for our more experienced guests, Big Creek Lodge can accommodate all.

Some days the neighbors call and invite the Big Creek Lodge team to head out to help them with some cow work. It is a great honor that they think highly enough of the team to include them and the guests. A day with the cowboys is always a treat (please request before booking!).

Depending on the time of year this could involve sorting, branding, trailing pairs to summer pasture, checking, relocating, and fall gathering and weaning. Big Creek Lodge will give you the basics of cowboy etiquette so you feel confident and informed if you get the opportunity to do this.

If conditions are right, a ride in Big Creek Park is a possibility. Here you will get to experience untouched Canadian wilderness, as logging is prohibited. Wildlife is often spotted, the views of the mountains are spectacular, and trails wind in and out of meadows and native forests.

Whatever your trip may bring, Big Creek Lodge aims to give you an unforgettable horseback experience, with a beautiful Log Home to relax in!

Three hearty Western Canadian meals are served each day – don’t worry you’ll get a special lunch packed while on day-long rides.

Try your hand at the horseshoe ring or throw the lariat to catch the wild wooden cow. If you want to get a touch of the gold rush in the 1850s, try your luck gold panning in the creek. You never know what the spring waters have washed our way from the untouched mountains upstream.

The avid photographers will have lots to point their cameras at whether just the scenery, the animals around the ranch, or the occasional wildlife, from the inquisitive squirrel to the mighty moose or Grizzly bear. If you have the desire to go a bit further, explore the surroundings on one of the lodge's mountain bikes. Driving directions from Williams Lake

  • From Williams Lake head out west on Highway 20 - don’t turn left at Riske Creek, but stay on Highway 20 for another 43km
  • Now it’s time to turn left at Lee’s Corner, a historical gas station and inn which unfortunately fell victim to the flames of the 2017 forest fires but the big sign is still there. After you have turned, you still see a blue sign to Big Creek to your right – now you drive on gravel.
  • Please set your trip meter to zero. After 3 kilometers, you cross the Chilcotin River and then turn left at 5.5km to Big Creek
  • After that just stay on the main road following the signs Big Creek
  • After 25km (at kilometer post 30) pass by Fletcher Lake – go ahead until you get to the T-junction with Farwell Canyon Road – in front of you there is a post with many direction signs
  • Turn right to enter the last section which is identical to option 1 – so follow Farwell Canyon Road for about 5km, then turn left into Witte Road – still be patient, don’t take the first option to the left
  • Stay on the main road and follow the signs Big Creek Lodge 15km along Witte Road – bear right at 47km at the sign and left again at 50km – after one more kilometer, you made it.

You will notice each road you take has numbered yellow km markers every km so you can see how far along you have traveled on that road.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please call Big Creek Lodge before you head out from Williams Lake and tell them which road you want to go. Since there is no cell phone coverage all along the way to Big Creek Lodge, the staff will go and look for you, if you aren’t arriving as expected. Please drive carefully, watch out for wild animals and logging trucks.
